Progress is not achieved by fulfilling majority expectations

Written by Horst Grabosch
Majority expectations are also called mainstream. Constant feeding of the mainstream leads to stagnation, and stagnation means death. For a long time, the diversity of cultures was a guarantee of diversity on the planet. For example, culturally inspired styles of music emerged, such as folk, funk, soul, rap, classical, blues and many others.
In a world that may one day be completely globalised, there is a danger of standardisation and music besides the mainstream starves to death in a niche existence because the market only makes profits in the mainstream and promotes it excessively.
A deadly spiral of uniformity develops from this. As long as capitalism remains the driving force of the world, only the diverse desires of the consumer can reopen the markets. Therefore – stay curious!
