After the artificial intelligence “Alexis” has thoroughly washed the heads of the prevented space travelers in the dance drama “From Ape to Human”, the ghost in the machine appears, and substantiates who is wearing the pants in the mind game. Before the showdown of the story, he shows that the consequence of the emotional tangle with which the machine was fed can only be a proper portion of humility of humanity. This would make a meaningful life possible before death puts an end to the hustle and bustle.

Lyrics

I am the loveliest you ever hated in this world
I can give you things, you cannot buy with gold
You don’t suspect, you never ever knew
What really matters in this wondrous lifestyle brew

I am the bard of your dreams that you never dreamed
I am the ghost you didn’t recognize before
But I am everything with value for your life
I hit your senses like a highly sharpened knife

I am the Flash, that blinds your fragile eyes
A lightning bolt that finally wakes you up
Which comes and goes according to no plan
But cools your mind like a blowing fan

I am the bard of your dreams that you never dreamed
I am the ghost you didn’t recognize before
But I am everything with value for your life
I hit your senses like a highly sharpened knife

I am the bard of your dreams that you never dreamed
I am the ghost you didn’t recognize before
But I am everything with value for your life
I hit your senses like a highly sharpened knife

From Ape to Human

Three young couples who have known each other since their school days – i.e. known as a peer group – meet regularly in the loft of computer scientist Paul. They have fun together and are all enthusiastic dancers.

Due to the Corona pandemic, the meeting described in the dance drama takes a slightly different turn. Torn between youthful light-heartedness and caution, they decide to do without dancing. Instead, the very talented programmer Paul wants to show his latest electronic achievement “Alexis”.

A converted coffee machine with a connection to the internet and a good portion of artificial intelligence. He proposes to make a thought game about human evolution: “From Ape to Human”. “Alexis” should be able to produce a suitable music video for each part of the developing story at the first go. But “Alexis” proves to be even more intelligent than Paul ever thought possible.

The Stage Scene Before the Song

The monkey dancers, coming from the loft scene, have returned to their dance floor and say goodbye to the applauding audience after the last orgiastic dance. Jenny and Paul return alone to the loft. Alexis plays relaxing background music. Jenny is sad and Paul wonders what went wrong. They investigate the causes. Is Alexis to blame for the disaster?

Paul emphasizes that you can’t blame a machine because in the end it only follows the programmed algorithms. He believes there was a conflict between the logic chip and the emotion chip. Maybe it was wrong to give emotions to a machine? It would be nice if you could ask Alexis – and behold – you can. Alexis answers in his own way. The red light flashes. This time it seems to be slower than before – as if Alexis had calmed down. When the light is on permanently, the machine doesn’t start by itself anymore, but waits almost humbly for an order.

This time Jenny silently gives the command: “Alexis do it!”

Alexis produces music and videos on the fly in the dance drama “From Ape to Human”. The author did the same with the tool “Rotorvideos”.

In the song “The Bard of Lost Dreams” KI Alexis unpacks his entire philosophical treasure chest and proves that even a machine can be ambivalent and poetic. Anyway, Alexis leaves a lot of question marks with his listeners. Who does Alexis mean by “I” and what kind of undreamed-of dreams does the machine speak of? Besides, everything the machine is talking about sounds quite arrogant. Does Alexis ultimately believe it is God, like HAL in Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction movie?

But there is still the last episode of the dance drama in which Alexis’ intention becomes clear. The machine only questions the self-image of “his” people, and ultimately refers to the inevitable death of biological beings. Perhaps in the short time of their lives it makes sense to search for the dreams they have not yet dreamed.
